When I first started my Etsy shop, the whole platform confused me, answers to my seemingly relevant questions weren’t forthcoming, but with the help of others and research, I now believe I have worked out a few tricks to help you on your way. The pointers in this article will help you to avoid some of the stresses I encountered when I took those first tentative steps into an alien world.
So you have started your Etsy shop, you’ve filled out the profile section, you’ve uploaded pictures and completed a blurb about yourself, these are crucial in my opinion to your business and your brand, people instinctively want to know about the person / people behind the scenes, but what next? Listing your items isn’t easy unless you know what you’re doing, with these pointers you will find it a breeze….
- Listing title – Make sure you are using as many words that relate to your product. For example kids plaque is great if that’s what you’re selling, but what is it made of? What colour is it? Can it be personalised? does it have any distinguishing features that would help to describe what you’re selling? Use as many of the letters as you can to describe your product and think about what you would search for. Look at other businesses and look at what the top search results use as their title, this is research adapt your findings to suit you.
- Product description – I personally copy my title into the listing description, this is because google takes the first few characters of your listing, so if you search “Polymer clay book of shadows” the first listing to appear in the shopping section of google is my Etsy listing….
- Tags – Etsy allows you to use 13 tags to describe what you are selling, these are crucial to your Etsy success. Using a combination of short tail tags and long tail tags you will reach a larger audience, the key to this is being clever with your wording. Short tail tags are one word tags, for my book of shadows (which is a tag in itself) I have used “Grimoire”which means a manual of magic or witchcraft used by witches and sorcerers, it’s a strong short tail tag. Long tail key words are a combination of words that describe your product, for this listing I have used Book of shadows as that’s what I would search for if I didn’t make them myself . Be smart with your tags, take a peek at what others are using and use the best ones yourself, again this is your research and it pays to take the time to do this.
- Good clear photos – Nobody wants to see clutter in the background, or blurry out of focus snaps, this is your chance to sell your crafts, bad photo’s will hinder your efforts.

*Top tip to increase traffic – I now use facebook as a place to network and showcase my designs, all orders are directed to Etsy, it keeps my orders in one place making it super easy to manage, as all of the details I need are all in one place.
